ATMS

I was not charged by any ATMs in Montreal, but my bank charged me for using a foreign ATM.

It was easier for me to go to a grocery store, buy a bottle of water and get cash back as i needed it so i could avoid that pesky fee. I hate paying my bank that non-network fee.

I haven't been home in ages... and last time I was the machine wouldn't even suck my card in!

BUT... back in the day, a machine would charge $1 if you didn't belong to the same bank, and nothing if you did. Some of those dodgy machines you find in the doorways of bars charge $2, but I don't remember ever being given warnings like you get here in the UK.

If you take money from your Canadian account from a foreign ATM you'll be charged at least $2.

If you think that's bad... you should see the charges they have in Australia! Thieving bastard banks!

I get charged if it is not my bank. The reason they won't take it is we don't have dual purpose cards. We have bank cards and credit cards. Tell them to use your debit/visa like a debit card it should work. my friend has a Bank of America card like that and he always tells them it is a debit card.

The banks don't warn you about fees. Well actually only the dodgy ones warn you. They usually charge $1.50. If you want a machine that won't charge fees make sure there is a deposit feature. If you see envelopes it usually means you're safe. If there is no deposit feature you will pay (even if it is your branch).
