Visit Detroit
Stuff that's worth checking out: Motown music fans
can visit the Motown Historical
Museum
to see where Detroit's distinct musical sound began at Hitsville USA. Of course,
the word Motown came from Detroit's fame as the Motor City where Henry Ford
built his first car and established Ford Motor Company. The Henry Ford
Museum
in nearby Dearborn is part of The Henry Ford, an organization devoted to
American history that includes the Ford Rouge Factory
Tour
where you can see a real automobile assembly line and Greenfield
Village
with seven districts highlighting aspects of American history. Major League
Baseball fans might want to take in a Detroit
Tigers
game in season at Comerica
Park and
ride on the Ferris wheel, too.
Comments:
If I were going to Detroit, I would definitely check out the
Detroit Tigers. Comerica Park is supposed to be a real gem.
This is a little nerdy, but
you can call up the urban planning department of Detroit. They might have some
cool things to say and give interesting histories of neighborhoods, social
problems, and solutions to problems. It's often more fun than the normal
touristy stuff. Some of my best tours of U.S. cities have been given by urban
planners. Detroit is a city with a lot of problems, and representative of
problems in the U.S. so going through it is a very cool living museum
exhibit.
