Montana
Beartooth
Highway
For anyone going to Yellowstone National Park, there is the
most incredible drive out of it called Beartooth Highway.
Gorp has a page
about it here.
Comments:
It is by
far the most beautiful drive I've been on and had some of the most amazing views
I've seen in my travels.
I completely agree about the Beartooth Highway
... we traveled up and over it from Red Lodge to Cooke City in 1991. The top of
it is my most favorite spot in the U.S.
The Beartooth Highway is
incredible. I worked in Yellowstone a few summers back. We used to backpack in
the area all the time. Chief Joseph Highway is also very nice. Tons of
incredible views.
Glacier National Park
Glacier National Park
is a great place for those who want to enjoy the outdoors. There are streams and
lakes for fishing and boating, routes for cycling, trails for horseback riding
and cross country skiing, and over 700 miles of hiking trails! A drive along the
historic landmark Going-to-the-Sun Road that traverses the park offers
spectacular views and crosses the Continental Divide at Logan Pass. Together
with Waterton Lakes National Park in Alberta, Canada, Glacier is part of the
Waterton-Glacier
International Peace Park World Heritage Site.
Little
Bighorn Battlefield
A stop at the Little Bighorn
Battlefield in southeastern Montana provides a sobering look at the
conflict between the United States government and Sioux and Cheyenne Indians who
refused to be confined to life on a reservation. The central figures in the
action were Chief Sitting Bull and Gen. George Armstrong Custer - Custer lost
this battle along with his life. Try to include one of the fascinating National
Park Service Ranger talks in your visit. You can also follow a self-guided
walking tour and imagine what it was like in 1876 when the Native Americans
living in the river valley stood their ground against the cavalry. Another
option is Apsaalooke
Tours presented by local Crow Indians.
Virginia
City
So you've always wondered what life was like in a Wild West gold
mining town? Visit Virginia City
and find out! It's the American West's best preserved gold mining town from the
1860s with historic buildings, the chance to ride on a steam locomotive, walking
tours, living history events in conjunction with nearby Nevada City, and
performances at a real western opera house.
