HI Auberge
de Jeunesse
The HI in Namur was fantastic.
The rooms
are brightly coloured and are in
modern chalets with an ensuite bathroom
and wet room. It's all relatively new and
comfortable.
There's free internet and breakfast is included.
It's about a five
minute walk from the city
centre along the river. It has a very pretty
view.
Look out for the turtle called Steve
in reception!
Things to Do
To me, Namur meant
civilisation. After weeks
on the road of little villages and towns it
was
such a luxury to be in a place with internet
cafes, western stores,
traffic and noise.
The shops are fantastic. I picked up some
great earings and a couple of CDs and games
in one of the cheap
stores.
The main attraction is the Citadel which can be
seen from all over town. The views from the top are spectacular as you
can see the whole town from up there
including the river and the roof
tops.
The best time to wander around is in the
morning because
it get's hot up there later in
the day and there isn't much shelter
particuarly if you're hiking up the hill to get
there in the first
place.
Hiking trails are well marked out and maps are provided in
the information centre. The building themselves aren't open to the public
or even that exciting but it is a historic part of the countrys
history and
therefore a compulsary visit on the
tour of the country.
Lonely
Planet Screwed me over story the cable
car to the Citadel is no
longer in operation. I
walked all the way up that hill looking for
that
cabel car to find out that it had stopped
working prior to Lonely
Planet going to print.
Places to Eat
There's a
great Mexican place near the City Centre. Unfortunately we forgot to take
down the details. They have an English menu and do great cocktails.
It's a fun splurge to wear silly hats and laugh.
